The first step was to address the labeling issue. That, of course, necessitated greater care at the shipping dock. We made numerous personal visits to the distribution center to observe the packaging process, and discover where it was going wrong. In addition, the our company institutes better communication and more frequent meetings with retailers, in order to head off packaging or distribution snafus before they triggered the standard warning letter. Face-to-face meetings are scheduled no less frequently than once a month, supplemented by weekly telephone conferences to monitor ongoing operations. We also placed someone in the distribution center on a permanent basis, to manage the process and ensure that it was meeting the retailer's exacting requirements.

Technology will make the job of the logistics professional easier, more meaningful, more powerful and better compensated. Logistics will become even more effective when advanced planning and scheduling software is integrated into the massive enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Along with more power will come better information. The goal will be shorter cycle times and greater flexibility of product volume and mix, with expectations of constant improvement. As a result, the importance of information accuracy and timeliness is going to skyrocket. When those functions are automated, managers become free to address high-level strategizing. Companies gain a better sense of those aspects of logistics that are a core competency, and should be managed directly. Of course, managers don't have the luxury of turning their backs on technology. There's simply too much data to deal with, and in a very short period of time, that is why it is essential to have technology enablers.
